The bottom line
Liberty Mutual offers all the basic types of car insurance every driver needs, as well as a variety of additional coverages and discounts.
Liberty Mutual even offers some specialty benefits, like extra auto insurance coverage for teachers that pays out if any school-owned property is damaged or stolen from your vehicle, and better car replacement, which ensures you’ll get enough to buy a car a model year newer if yours is totaled. The wide variety of endorsements makes Liberty Mutual a good choice for drivers who need more personalized benefits.
With more than 100 years in the insurance industry and coverage available in all 50 states, Liberty Mutual is a solid choice for car insurance. The downside to Liberty Mutual is the cost; Liberty Mutual has higher-than-average rates, even for safe drivers, which means drivers considering a Liberty Mutual policy should still compare quotes from multiple companies to make sure they are getting the best price.
Liability coverage: Covers the cost of bodily injuries or property damage you cause to someone else in an at-fault accident. Liability coverage is required in almost every state, but each state has different requirements .
Personal injury protection: Also referred to as PIP or no-fault insurance, personal injury protection covers medical expenses (and other costs, like lost wages and funeral benefits) if you or your passengers are hurt in an accident, no matter who was at fault. PIP coverage is required in some states.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: Also known as UM/UIM, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for your medical expenses if you’re hit by a driver who doesn’t have insurance, or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover all your medical expenses. UM/UIM is required coverage in some states.
Collision coverage: Covers damage to your vehicle after a car accident, whether or not you were at fault.
Comprehensive coverage: Covers non-collision damage to your car, including damage caused by extreme weather, hail, flood, fire, falling objects, vandalism and theft.
Medical payments: Also known as MedPay, this covers medical costs for you and your passengers if you get into a covered accident, but the benefit is usually small, between $1,000 and $10,000.
Additional coverages offered
Deductible fund: If you purchase collision coverage, you can pay an extra premium to reduce your deductible by $100 each year.
Lifetime repair guarantee: If you get your car repaired at an approved facility as part of an approved claim, the repairs are 100% guaranteed by Liberty Mutual for as long as you own the car.
New car replacement: If your car is totaled in the first year you own it, Liberty Mutual will pay for a brand new car, not just the depreciated value of the vehicle.
Better car replacement: If your car is totaled, Liberty Mutual will pay for a model that's one year newer than your totaled car.
Rental car reimbursement: This can help pay for a rental car if your car is being repaired after a covered accident.
24 hour roadside assistance: Covers necessary services if your car breaks down, like fuel delivery, towing, locksmith services, battery jumpstarts, winching, and flat tire repair.
Gap coverage: If your car is stolen or totaled, this pays the difference between your loan and the actual cash value (ACV) of your vehicle.
Original parts replacement: This lets you replace any damaged parts to your vehicle with parts that meet the highest quality standards. If original manufacturer parts are not available for your vehicle or they are no longer in production, you’ll get comparable or reconditioned parts.
Teachers auto insurance: Covers up to $2,500 if your teaching materials or school-owned property is stolen or damaged while in your vehicle.
Liberty Mutual also offers a variety of other types of insurance that can be bundled with your auto policy for savings, including:
We used multiple sample quotes to compare the average cost of a full coverage policy from Liberty Mutual (50/100/50 coverage limits and $500 deductibles for comprehensive and collision coverage) to competitor rates using Quadrant data for the same coverage with the same driver profile. Our sample driver was based on single drivers aged 30, 35, and 45 driving a 2017 Toyota Camry LE about 10,000 miles per year.

RightTrack is Liberty Mutual’s usage-based discount program (many big insurance companies offer usage-based discounts that track your driving behavior and award savings for safe driving).
RightTrack uses the Liberty Mutual mobile app to track your driving for 90 days, and drivers who show safe driving habits can save up to 30% on their car insurance.
You save 10% just for signing up with RightTrack and, after driving normally for 90 days while using the tracking app, you’ll be given your final RightTrack score. That score will determine how much you’ll save on your car insurance but, in some states, risky drivers could see an increase in their rates.
