State Auto also has a higher-than-average number of customer complaints, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, but it may still be the best choice for drivers who want or need robust coverage options.

State Auto is available in 33 states, but a 2022 merger with Liberty Mutual could potentially change prices or coverage options for State Auto customers in the near future.

  • Nine different discounts available

  • Unique perks and features, including a usage-based coverage option and pet coverage

Cons

  • Higher-than-average rates

  • No online quote tool

  • High number of customer complaints

Basic coverages offered

With State Auto you’ll get all the basic car insurance coverage options you need, including:

  • Liability coverage: Required in almost every state, liability insurance covers the cost if you hurt someone or damage their property in a car accident. Liability only covers damage you cause to someone else, not damage to yourself or your property.

  • Personal injury protection: Also referred to as PIP or no-fault insurance, personal injury protection covers medical or other expenses, like lost wages, if you or your passengers are injured in an accident, no matter who was at fault. PIP is required coverage in no-fault states.

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: Also called UM/UIM, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for your medical expenses if you’re in an accident where the at-fault driver doesn’t have car insurance, or if the at-fault driver’s insurance doesn’t cover the full extent of the damage. UM/UIM is required coverage in some states.

  • Collision coverage: Covers damage to your own car after a car accident, no matter who was at fault.

  • Comprehensive coverage: Covers damage to your car that wasn’t caused by a collision, including damage from extreme weather, hail, flood, fire, falling objects, vandalism and theft.

Additional coverages offered

Even if you don’t choose one of State Auto’s coverage packages, you can mix and match different coverage options when you’re getting a policy. State Auto’s additional coverages include:

  • Full safety glass coverage: An addition to your comprehensive coverage, this coverage helps replace or repair damaged glass on your vehicle with no deductible.

  • Accident forgiveness & minor violation coverage: If you’re in an accident or you have a minor traffic violation (like rolling through a stop sign) this additional coverage can prevent it from raising their rates.

  • AutoXtended® coverage endorsement: Extra protection for you, your vehicle, and the possessions inside, including benefits like bail bonds, cell phone coverage, customizing equipment, pet coverage, and death indemnity. This endorsement is automatically included in the Protection Plus and AutoXtended® Premier policies.

  • Ridesharing coverage: Coverage to protect you if you are a professional rideshare driver for a service like Uber or Lyft driver.

  • Roadside assistance: Covers roadside services like towing, delivery of supplies including oil, water and fuel, jump start your battery, changing a tire, and lockout service (up to $100)

  • Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts coverage: If your vehicle is less than 10 years old, this covers the cost to repair it with manufacturer parts rather than aftermarket parts.

  • Auto replacement cost: Also called Total Loss Plus, this coverage pays for a brand new car if your vehicle (less than two years old) is totaled.

Ratings methodology

Price

3.4/5

We used Quadrant data to compare the average cost of a full coverage policy (50/100/50 coverage limits and a $500 deductible for comprehensive and collision coverage) from State Auto to competitor rates for the same coverage with the same driver profile. We specifically compared profiles for single drivers aged 30, 35, and 45 driving a 2017 Toyota Camry LE about 10,000 miles per year to get an average annual rate for State Auto car insurance in every available state.

Customer experience

3.9/5

State Auto has a worse-than-average rating on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) National Complaint Index Report, which means it has more customer service complaints than the average car insurance company. State Auto does not have a score on J.D. Power’s 2022 Auto Claims Satisfaction Study or the J.D. Power’s 2022 Digital Experience Study.

Coverage options

4.1/5

State Auto offers 21 different types of auto insurance coverage, giving it an excellent score when it comes to total available coverage options. State Auto has three tiers of coverage: Standard, Protection Plus, and AutoXtended Premier. Available coverage types include standard car insurance coverages, like liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage, as well as add-ons like roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement.

Financial strength

2.2/5

State Auto has a decent financial strength rating in the industry, scoring an A- with A.M. Best. However, the company does not have a rating with S&P or Moody’s. This means State Auto is likely to be able to pay out its customers’ claims.

Expanded coverage options

State Auto offers a Standard insurance plan that allows you to customize your coverage, but also offers two additional levels of coverage packages: Protection Plus and AutoXtended® Premier.

Protection Plus offers the same coverage options as State Auto’s standard insurance, and also includes:

  • Accident forgiveness and minor violation coverage (your rates won’t go up after an accident or low-level driving violation)

  • Full safety glass coverage option

  • Up to $500 in cell phone coverage

  • Up to $10,000 in emergency ambulance coverage

  • $250 in locksmith services and key replacement

  • $500 pet coverage if your pets are injured in a car accident

  • Coverage for rental vehicles

  • Waived comprehensive and collision deductibles

The highest level package, State Auto’s AutoXtended® Premier, offers all of the above coverages, plus increased limits for some coverages, including:

  • Up to $1,000 in cell phone coverage

  • Up to $25,000 in emergency ambulance coverage

  • $500 for locksmith services and key replacement

  • $750 pet coverage
